Atletico Madrid Stumble in Spanish Title Race

Spanish league leaders Atletico Madrid failed to put a hand on the Primera Liga title after falling to a shock 2-0 defeat away at midtable Levante this evening.

Days after humbling Chelsea out of the UEFA Champions League, Atletico had the chance to go six points clear with two matches left to play if they won at Levante.

However a Felipe Luis own goal had that script in disarray after just seven minutes while a David Barral 20 minutes from time sealed a shock win for Levante and threw the La Liga title race wide open.

Atletico now have 88 points from 36 matches, three points ahead of Barcelona that have also played 36 matches while Real Madrid lie in third place with 82 points but have two games in hand.

Real Madrid play the first of those games in hand tonight at home to Valencia, where a win for Real would still have them in third place but leave the top three sides separated by just three points.
