England coach Roy Hodgson has named a predominantly young 23-man squad for the 2014 World Cup, while seven players have been put on stand-by in the event of a player withdrawing from the squad before the World Cup begins.

Southampton trio Rickie Lambert, Luke Shaw and Adam Lallana made the list as did Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling, Everton youngster Ross Barkley and Arsenal duo Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who is recovering from an injury.

Also called up are regulars Wayne Rooney of Manchester United, Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, Chelsea’s Frank Lampard, Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge as well as Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart.

The seven players put on stand-by are Norwich City goalkeeper John Ruddy, Manchester United duo Michael Carrick and Tom Cleverley, Liverpool defender Jon Flanagan, former Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermaine Defoe and West Ham striker Andy Carroll.

Uncapped John Stones of Everton is the last name on the stand-by list and will be brought in as replacement for Phil Jones if the Manchester United defender does not recover from injury in time for the World Cup.

Chelsea defenders John Terry and Ashley Cole were not called up, prompting Cole’s retirement from international football. Arsenal defender Kieran Gibbs was also not called up.

England will face Uruguay, Costa Rica and 2006 world champions Italy in Group D at the World Cup, with their first match coming against the Italians on June 15.
