Real Madrid failed to capitalise on the slip ups of their title rivals after snatching a 2-2 draw at home to Valencia thanks to a brilliant stoppage time goal by Cristiano Ronaldo, his 50th for the club this season.

Having seen Barcelona draw on Saturday and then Atletico Madrid lose earlier today, a win would have drawn Real level on points with Barça and within three points of Atletico.

But with an evenly contested first half heading for a goalless end, Jeremy Mathieu silenced the crowd in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium by putting Valencia ahead just before half time.

Sergio Ramos headed Real back on level terms in the 59th minute but Dani Parejo restored Valencia’s lead only five minutes later, silencing the Madrid crowd again.

Ronaldo missed a clear-cut chance a minute later and that seemed to sum up the night for the home side until three minutes into stoppage time when the Portuguese ace converted an Angel di Maria ball in with a back-heeled volley to win a point for Real.

As a result, Real remain third with 83 points but have a game in hand and would need to win their last three matches and hope both Barça and Atletico drop points in one of the duos final two matches; which includes Atletico visiting Barça on the final day of the season.
