Messi’s new contract will be signed in the next few days according to the statement and is expected to make him the highest earning footballer in the world, with a reported figure of £400,000 per week.

The 26 year old Argentine came to Barcelona from Argentine side Newell’s Old Boys in 2000 and signed his first professional contract with the Catalan club in July 2004.

Since then, Messi has become Barcelona’s all time leading goalscorer with 354 goals, won three UEFA Champions League titles as well as six Spanish league titles among many more club and individual titles.

Messi could win a seventh league title this weekend if Barcelona win the title deciding match against league leaders Atletico Madrid as the La Liga season concludes on Saturday.

Barcelona is currently in second place with 86 points and a win will guarantee them the title based on a better head-to-head record against Atletico that lie three points ahead.
