French champions Paris St. Germain have reached an agreement with English Premier League side Chelsea for the transfer of Brazilian defender David Luiz for an undisclosed fee.

According to statements posted on the websites of both clubs this evening, the transfer of David Luiz is subject to reaching an agreement on personal terms and passing a medical at PSG.

Following those, the transfer will be completed on June 10 for a reported fee of £40m, two days before the opening match of the 2014 World Cup between Brazil and Croatia.

When completed, the deal is expected to make David Luiz the most expensive defender ever, dwarfing the £35m and £31m transfer fees paid by PSG to bring Thiago Silva and Marquinhos from AC Milan and AS Roma.

PSG have also been linked with Chelsea’s Eden Hazard, although a move for the Belgian star is unlikely due to the transfer cap imposed on PSG by the recent sanctions imposed on the French side for breaching UEFA’s FFP regulations.

David Luiz joined Chelsea from Benfica in 2011, making 143 appearances for the Blues and winning the UEFA Champions League and FA Cup in 2012 as well as the UEFA Europa League last year.
