Costa Rica pulled off the biggest shock result so far at the ongoing FIFA World Cup after coming from behind to defeat 2010 semi-finalists Uruguay 3-1 in the opening Group D match in Fortaleza.

Playing without Liverpool striker Luis Suarez who is recovering from injury, Uruguay broke the deadlock midway through the first half courtesy of a penalty by PSG striker Edinson Cavani.

Cavani had minutes earlier had a goal ruled out for offside as Uruguay looked to run away with the game against a Costa Rican side written off in a Group D that also comprises Italy and England.

The Central Americans however asserted themselves in an evenly contested match following the Uruguay goal, but were unable to find a way back as the first half ended in Uruguay’s favour.

The adventurous forays of Costa Rica eventually paid off in three second half minutes just before the hour mark, with a stunning strike from Joel Campbell levelling scores before Oscar Duarte gave Costa Rica a shock lead.

The desperate Uruguayans brought on striker Abel Hernandez soon after in search of an equaliser but it was the underdogs who would wrap up a historic win as Campbell found Marco Urena with a well weighted pass which Urena stroked past an onrushing Fernando Muslera in the 84th minute.

The frustration got to Uruguay late on as Maxi Pereira received a straight red card after maliciously bringing down man of the match Campbell near the corner flank.

Reigning South American champions Uruguay must now overcome Italy and England to progress from the group stage or face elimination.
