Spain goalkeeper David de Gea has been ruled out of the ongoing World Cup in Brazil after suffering a hip injury during training.

The 23 year old Manchester United keeper was at his first World Cup, having only made the squad due to the absence of former Barcelona keeper Victor Valdes who suffered a torn ligament in April.

Spain will however be unable to call in a replacement for De Gea as the deadline to replace injured players elapsed on June 11.

Real Madrid keeper Iker Casillas, who was culpable in three of the goals in the 5-1 loss to Netherlands, is now set to start Spain’s next match against Chile where failure to win would all but end Spain’s World Cup campaign.
