Nairobi – German Police experts on Monday begun conducting training for Kenyan police officers and prosecutors in methods to fight and prosecute terrorism.

The June 16 to June 20 workshop, which is being held in the coastal city of Mombasa, involves investigation after terrorist attacks,” said a statement from the Germany Embassy in Nairobi.

The statement said the police and prosecution officials would also be trained in and establishing facts, investigation via Internet, fight against cyber crimes and data processing after major incidents.

“Analysis of radicalisation and recruitment of terrorists will be addressed as well as aspects of surveillance in procedures against terrorism,’’ the statement said.

Since 2009, the German Federal Criminal Police Office has supported the Kenyan criminal police forces with a number of workshops, training and equipment.

Kenya’s counter-terrorism officers have in the recent past been kept busy stemming spreading Islamic extremist militancy especially in the coastal city of Mombasa and in northern Kenya where the Somali militant group Al-Shabaab has cells.

The Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU) has also previously denied allegations that they have been carrying out acts of anguish on accused persons.

However, the Kenyan Government has on various occasions credited ATPU with thwarting dozens of terrorist plots and arresting suspects in an ostensibly robust counter-terrorism response.

Meanwhile, the embassy said the German Federal Criminal Police Office has stepped up its close cooperation with Kenyan security forces in the fight against terrorism and crime.

“As a result of this, German Ambassador Andreas Peschke will officially hand over motorbikes, office equipment and professional equipment for securing crimes scenes to Kenyan police officials and representatives of Mombasa County,’’ the statement said.

The equipment is dedicated to the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit ( ATPU), Anti Narcotics Unit (ANU) and to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
