A new world champion will emerge at the 2014 FIFA World Cup after reigning champions Spain fell to a 2-0 defeat to Chile in a Group B match at the Maracana.

Barcelona duo Xavi and Gerard Pique were dropped by Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque as Pedro and Javi Martinez started in their place. Iker Casillas hiwever kept his place in goal to earn his 156th cap for Spain.

Needing a win to stay in strong contention for qualification, Spain met a boisterous Chile side that attacked from the start and received due reward by taking a 20th minute lead.

Charles Aranguiz squared for Eduardo Vargas to open the scoring after being found in the box by a defence splitting pass from Barcelona forward Alexis Sanchez.

Aranguiz would go on to double Chile’s lead just before half-time, lashing home a rebound after Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas punched a goalbound shot to his path.

The second half saw Spain dominate possession but still fail to find a breakthrough, leading to Diego Costa being replaced by Fernando Torres having failed to register a shot on target.

Spain would eventually resort to long range efforts but Chile goalkeeper Bravo was on hand to deny Sergio Ramos from a free-kick, a curling effort from substitute Santi Cazorla and a shot to the top corner by Andres Iniesta as Chile held on for a famous win.

As a result, Netherlands and Chile are the first nations to confirm their places in the last 16 of the mundial while Spain join France in 2002 and Italy in 2010 as reigning champions that fell out in the group stages.
