Abuja-  The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, has said the successful conduct of the Ekiti State elections was a clear indication that security agencies could assist in conduct of free, fair and credible polls.

Abubakar stated this while fielding questions from State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He noted that what the police did during the exercise was to do what was right and proper as the ‘lead agency of internal security’.

According to him, the police, in collaboration and partnership with other security agencies, work to ensure safety of lives and property and for people to go and do what they are expected to do.

‘‘We used Ekiti to showcase the fact that it is possible for Nigerian security agencies to conduct free, fair and credible elections in this country.

‘‘This should be taken as a test case; we will do everything to improve upon it,’’ he said.

Abubakar thanked all Nigerians, particularly the people of Ekiti, for conducting themselves in an orderly manner.

He commended officers and men of all security agencies for discharging their responsibilities diligently.

Ayo Fayose of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) defeated incumbent Gov. Kayode Fayemi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Saturday’s governorship election polling a total of polled a total of 203, 090 votes while Governor Fayemi had 120, 443 votes. Bamidele came a distant third with 18, 135 votes.

Dr Fayemi, in a show of political maturity, congratulated the state Governor-Elect Fayose, on his victory in the June 21 governorship election, promising to stand by the will of the people

“If indeed this is the will of the Ekiti People, I stand in deference to your will. If the result of the elections is an expression of the voice of our people, we must all heed your voice,’’ said Fayemi, a move that has drawn commendation from many Nigerian political analysts who say, Fayemi has redefined Nigerian politics by his concession.
