A goal just past the hour mark from Oribe Peralta secured a lone goal victory for Mexico over Cameroun in the second Group A match of the FIFA World Cup played in Natal.

The match would be remembered for the heavy rain that fell for most of the duration, but more so for the officiating which came to focus after three goals were ruled out in the opening half hour.

Samuel Eto’o saw an early effort come off the Mexico post. The latin American nation then had the ball in the net minutes later through a Giovanni Dos Santos volley.

But he was adjudged to be offside by the assistant referee, though replays showed the referee’s call was arguably wrong.

Cameroun then had a goal disallowed in the 16th minute, and rightly so, as Samuel Eto’o was in an offside position at the time Chopou-Moting stroked the ball past Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.

Dos Santos would then have a second goal disallowed in the 29th minute as he was adjudged to be offside when heading in from a cornerkick, despite the ball being flicked to his path by a Cameroun player. The rest of the first half would play out in scrappy manner as the rain pelted down.

Tempers came close to flaring early in the second half as Alex Song escaped without a booking for a studs up challenge on Dos Santos as the Mexicans dominated early on.

Cameroun however come close to breaking the deadlock just before the hour mark when a free-kick from Benoit Assou-Ekotto took a slight deflection and sailed just wide of the Mexico post with Ochoa wrong-footed by the deflection.

Mexico finally broke the deadlock soon after with Peralta pouncing on a rebound after Itanje could only parry a low shot from the lively Dos Santos who was voted man of the match.

Ochoa would pull off a good save in the 90th minute as Cameroun searched for an equaliser while substitute Javier Hernandez shot over from six yards seconds later after a Cameroun defender was dispossessed at the edge of the area.

The win is the first by Mexico over an African side and puts them in second place in Group A behind hosts Brazil who beat Croatia 3-1 in the opening match on Thursday.
