World number one Rafael Nadal has this evening won the 2014 French Open title in Paris after coming from a set down to overcome world number two Novak Djokovic 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, 6-4 to claim a record ninth Roland Garros title.

The win is a record fifth successive triumph at Roland Garros for Nadal and extends the Spaniard’s record streak of winning at least one grand slam each year to 10 consecutive years.

It is also Nadal’s 14th grand slam title, second to Roger Federer’s record haul of 17 titles, while Djokovic must now wait till next year to try winning his first French Open title and achieving career slam.

Initially though, Djokovic looked like he could win his first French Open title after claiming the first set 6-3. But after both players held serve in opening five games of the second set, Nadal broke in the sixth to take a 4-2 lead.

Djokovic would however return the break in the next game before holding serve to level at four games apiece. But after holding serve to level again at 5-5, Djokovic succumbed to Nadal who went on to claim the second set 7-5.

From then on, the momentum was behind Nadal as he breezed through the third set 6-2 before holding off a Djokovic rally similar to the second set to see out the fourth set 6-4 and win the title after more than three hours.

Next up is the grass surface Wimbledon championship serving off later in June, with French Open semi-finalist Andy Murray the defending champion there.
