Abuja – The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Thursday in Abuja held a simulation on air accidents, to prepare stakeholders to handle such mishaps when they occur.

Simulation is act of imitation or enactment of something anticipated.

The stakeholders include the police, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS), Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Federal Fire Service.

Others are the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, Nigerian Immigration Service, Nigerian Custom Service, Nigerian Army and NEMA.

NEMA Director-General, Alhaji Mohammad Sani-Sidi, said the exercise was organised by the agency to bring all stakeholders together to activate an air accident plan developed by the agency.

Represented by Mr Daniel Gambo, the Director of Training in the agency, Sani-Sidi said that the exercise was to test the

preparedness of rescue agencies in the event of accidents in the aviation industry.

“The essence of the exercise is for rescue agencies to know what is expected of them in an event of an air accident,” he said.

The Controller-General of the Federal Fire Service, Mr Olusegun Okebiorun, who hosted the event at the Fire Service Academy Sheda, Gwagwalada, FCT, commended NEMA for organising the simulation.

He said it was apt in the face of the current challenges facing rescue respondents in the country.

He said the activation of the air accident plan would reduce casualties rates in the event of accidents.

According to him, the exercise will better prepare rescue agencies to respond to emergencies in nine emergency scenarios.

Mr Nnanna Ugbaga, the Airspace Manager, Abuja Airport, explained that the exercise, the first of its kind in the country, showed that safety of lives was a collective responsibility.

He stressed the need for greater synergy among all rescue agencies to protect and safeguard lives.

During the exercise, all critical stakeholders involved were activated.
