Arsenal have completed the signing of French defender Mathieu Debuchy from fellow Premier League club Newcastle United on a long-term contract for an undisclosed fee believed to be in the region of £10m.

Debuchy, who was part of France’s 2014 World Cup campaign which ended against Germany in the quarter-final stage, becomes Arsenal’s second arrival from the transfer window following the arrival of Chile forward Alexis Sanchez in a £27.5m from Barcelona last week.

The 28 year old comes in as replacement for compatriot Bacary Sagna who joined Premier League champions Manchester City in a free transfer after his contract at Arsenal expired.

On completing his Arsenal move, Debuchy stated ”I am looking forward to working with Arsène Wenger and to helping the team build on last season’s FA Cup success.”

The former Lille defender stated further that, ”playing again in the Champions League is a big excitement for me and I will do my best to help Arsenal compete for trophies.”

On his part, the Arsenal manager stated ”he is a quality defender who has good Premier League experience and I am confident he will fit in very well with us.”

Debuchy came to the Premier League in January 2013 after nine years at French Ligue 1 Lille and featured in 46 matches for Newcastle United, that have replacecd him withthe signing of Dutch right-back Daryl Janmaat from Feyenoord.
