It took the quick intervention of law enforcement officers in preventing what would have been a chaotic situation at the Lagos-Ota tollgate, a boundary between Lagos and Ogun state, southwest Nigeria, after a multiple accident Saturday, involving eight vehicles.

Eye witnesses who spoke to The News Online at the scene of the accident said pandemonium broke out just before a major intersection at the Lagos-Ota tollgate, when the driver of a black truck with plate number KAF212XA, lost control of the vehicle due to brake failure, lurching into a commercial vehicle and creating a ripple effect on other vehicles.

The accident occurred approximately 15:35 GMT.

The Abeokuta-Ota-Lagos route is notorious for long hours of traffic, as commercial drivers drop off and pick up passengers at will, creating a major hitch for other road users.

A traffic control officer with the Federal Road Safety Corp, confirmed that no life was lost, although a car owner whose Volkswagen Golf was almost a complete write-off, had a cut in the face from shard of broken windscreen.

Traffic on both lanes was gridlocked but the situation eased off after about thirty minutes, as the battered vehicles were carted away by towing vans to the near-by Sango-Ota Police station in Ogun state.

“Now I no longer have a car,” one of the drivers lamented soon after the accident.
