The embattled Governor of Nasarawa state Tanko Al-Makura was saved from what may have turned out to be another impeachment saga, as the Chief Judge Wednesday, dissolved a seven-man panel set up to investigate allegations of gross misconduct against him.

The impeachment move, which Gov. Al-Makura described as “unconstitutional and grossly illegal” was terminated after the Nasarawa State House of Assembly directed the Chief Judge, Justice Sulaiman Dikko, to dissolve the panel made up of APC loyalists to the governor.

While Al-Makura had disclosed his readiness to appear before the panel of inquiry to absolve himself of blame for misconduct, there were indications that the investigation may end up in his favour since members of the panel were fellow party supporters of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Speaker of the state house of assembly on 14 July, directed the Clerk to serve Al-Makura with notice of impeachment for ‘gross misconduct’ confirming speculation that the PDP-led government of President Jonathan was working with the PDP-dominated Nassarawa Assembly, to impeach the Governor and install the Deputy Governor.

However, the Presidency and the state Assembly had denied the allegations. But the directive by the Speaker on 14 July asking the Clerk to serve Al-Makura with notice of impeachment for ‘gross misconduct’ appeared to be a confirmation of the speculation.

Deputy Majority Leader of the House, Yahaya Usman (PDP-Umaisha/Ugya), during a brief plenary of the House in Lafia on that day, had raised an urgent motion, presenting a document signed by 20 of the 24 members of the Assembly, which contained allegations of gross misconduct against the governor.

The speaker said the House had complied with the provision of the constitution to serve the governor with impeachment notice directing the Clerk to immediately serve the notice on Al-Makura on 14 July.
