JERUSALEM (AFP) – Developments since Israel launched an offensive against the Gaza Strip in a bid to stamp out rocket fire by Palestinian militants.

The campaign follows violence over the grisly murder of a Palestinian teenager by Jewish extremists, which was itself an apparent revenge attack for the kidnap and murder of three Israeli youths in the occupied West Bank.

8: Israel launches Operation Protective Edge, with dozens of air strikes on Gaza in response to a rocket fire by Palestinian militants in the coastal strip.

At least 28 Palestinians killed in the largest and deadliest Israeli air campaign since 2012.

Israel calls up 40,000 reservists for a possible ground assault.

The Islamist Hamas movement which controls Gaza says “all Israelis” potential targets for retaliation.

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas demands an immediate halt to Israel’s offensive.

12: The bloodiest day of the conflict, with 56 Palestinians dead.

The UN Security Council urges Israel and Hamas to end hostilities, calling on both sides to respect international humanitarian law, and stop the loss of life.

Israel continues border troop build-up ahead of a possible ground invasion, warning Palestinians in northern Gaza to leave their homes.

13: Israeli naval commandos launch a brief ground operation overnight in northern Gaza, the first since the offensive began, targeting a rocket launcher site.

Abbas asks the UN to put the state of Palestine under “international protection”.

14: A Palestinian is killed by the Israeli army in a clash near the southern West Bank city of Hebron.

Two rockets from Syria and one from Lebanese territory hit Israel, including two on the Golan Heights.

Egypt proposes a ceasefire to start at 0600 GMT Tuesday.
