Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari and forwards Hulk and Fred were loudly jeered by fans upon arriving at the Mane Garrincha National Stadium in Brasilia for Saturday’s third-place play-off against the Netherlands.

Large screens inside the stadium relayed pictures of the Brazilian team bus arriving, and Scolari and the players were greeted with a chorus of boos by the home supporters scattered around the 69,000-capacity venue.

However, in stark contrast, supporters gave a show of support for centre-back David Luiz, who was cheered as he stepped off the team coach.

In the absence of the suspended Thiago Silva, he captained the team that was humiliated 7-1 by Germany in Tuesday’s semi-final in Belo Horizonte and could not hold back the tears in a television interview after the match.

Brazil are attempting to rescue some of their battered pride by beating the Dutch in the capital in the match that serves as the appetiser for Sunday’s final between Germany and Argentina in Rio de Janeiro.

The match will kick off 9 p.m Nigerian time.
