Premier League side Chelsea played out a 1-1 draw at Austrian club RZ Pellets WAC while AS Monaco began life after Colombian forward James Rodriguez with an entertaining win at Atletico Nacional in a couple of pre-season matches played.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho started a number of reserve players in the warm-up match in Austria, with newly signed full-back Felipe Luis also starting as did Dutch midfielder Marco van Ginkel who missed all of last season injured.

Following a goalless first half, Silvio Carlos gave the Austrian side the lead nine minutes into the second half and with an unlikely win on the horizon, half-time substitute Jeremie Boga earned a draw for Chelsea with his goal seven minutes from time.

After the match, Mourinho stated ”It was perfect because we reached the objectives we had for this game. They gave us exactly the kind of match we needed and their intensity was good for us.”

The Portuguese tactician was also happy to see goalkeeper Petr Cech continue his recovery from a shoulder injury. Mourinho also revealed Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas will be involved in Chelsea’s next friendly match against Olimpija Ljubljana on Sunday.

Mourinho also stated the imminent return of Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois will make a perfect situation for Chelsea as the club would be in safe hands when either Cech or Courtois starts a match.

In another pre-season friendly, French club AS Monaco played out a 4-2 win at Atletico Nacional in its first match since seeing losing James Rodriguez to Real Madrid in an €80m deal.

Monaco were also without Colombian striker Radamel Falcao who is close to making full recovery from injury but made a blistering start to the match against Nacional.

Goals from Anthony Martial, former Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov and Fabinho gave the principality club a 3-0 lead heading into the half-time break.

The South Americans however mounted a comeback with goals just after the hour mark and two minutes from time, only for Yannick Ferreira to secure the win for Monaco in stoppage time.

Elsewhere, Mario Mandzukic made his first appearance for Atletico Madrid since joining from Bayern Munich though teenager Hector Hernandez scored the only goal in Atletico’s win at Numancia.

Aston Villa beat FC Dallas 2-0 in another friendly while a pitch invasion saw the match between Vincent Enyeama’s LOSC Lille and Maccabi Haifa called off with Lille leading 2-0 at the time.

Premier League side West Ham United lost 2-1 at Wellington Phoenix in New Zealand, Olympique Lyon drew goalless with Europa League holders Sevilla and Schalke thrashed DJK Rosenheim 11-1 with Nigerian midfielder Chinedu Obasi scoring the first goal for Schalke in the second minute.
