Governor Tanko Al-Makura’s days as governor of the central Nigerian state of Nasarawa, are numbered as the PDP dominated House of Assembly pushed ahead with plans to sack him from office.

Despite widespread speculations that President Goodluck Jonathan’s meeting with the speaker of the House of Assembly, Musa Muhammed and five other members yesterday was meant to quell the move, Assembly has rather put the impeachment train on acceleration, with the constitution today of a seven-member panel by the Chief Judge Suleiman Dikko.

The panel will investigate the 16 count allegations levelled against the Governor.

Yusuf Usman was named at the head of the panel, which has Mohammed Keana, Joel Galadima, Abdul Usman, Samuel Chaku, Mohammed Usman, and Daniel Chaga as members.

The Panel was inaugurated Friday at the conference hall of the state Ministry for Local Government along Shendam road, Lafia.

During the inauguration, Justice Dikko said the setting up of the committee was in line with the Wednesday directive of the State Assembly for him to appoint a seven man panel to investigate the governor.

The judge urged the members to discharge their duties in line with section 188 subsection 1 -11 of the Nigerian constitution 1999 which states that “A panel appointed under this section shall have powers and exercise its functions in accordance with such procedure as may be prescribed by the house of assembly and within three months of its appointment, report its findings to the house of assembly”.

The investigative committee is expected to report to the House within seven days.

The Nasarawa State lawmakers launched impeachment proceedings against Al Makura last week, accusing him of 16 offences, including corruption, extra-budgetary expenditure and gross misconduct.

Al-Makura, is a member of the APC, an amalgam of parties, bent on upstaging the PDP from the control of Nigeria’s centre in 2015 elections.

But the PDP has fought back, using impeachment to deal with some of the governors. Last week, Governor Murtala Nyako was sacked by members of the Adamawa House of Assembly, by the PDP controlled house.

Now it seems the stage is being set for another impeachment in Nasarawa state, next week.
