A pharmacist with the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital Kano, Rabi’u Hussain, said on Friday that regular intake of water and fruits could assist in curing haemorrhoid, popularly known as ‘piles’.
Hussain, who made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Friday, said increase in intake of fluids could help in curing the disease.

He said the ailment, caused by swollen tissues, often triggers minor bleeding or small blood clots.

The pharmacist said hemorrhoid occur when the tissue became enlarged, weakened and could come free of their supporting structure which results in a sac-like bulge that extends into the anal area.

“Staying hydrated helps prevent flare-ups and hastens their cure. Drink at least six to eight glasses of fluid (other than alcohol) each day,” he advised.

He also said increase intake of ‘fibre’ and consumption of more fruits and vegetables assist, prevents and cures constipation.

“The condition commonly occurs during and after pregnancy or in other situations when pressure is placed on or around the anus,” he said.

He said that “self-care methods are useful for relieving itching and discomfort caused by hemorrhoids”.

He, however, said that medical intervention was sometimes required to reduce inflammation that would not recede on its own.

Hussain also advised people to avoid sitting on the same spot for a long time and to avoid intake of food that has too much sugar as they were major causes of hemorrhoid.
