Cameroonian soldiers patrol border with Nigeria

Gunmen of the  Boko Haram sect have staged another attack on Cameroon, killing 10 people and kidnapping one person  in a raid on the village of Zigague in remote northern Cameroon.

The attack was staged  on Wednesday, state radio reported.

According to a reuters report, the heavily armed gunmen arrived in a pick-up truck and on motorcycles at around 2 p.m. local time (1300 GMT) and stormed the house of a local chief, kidnapping one of his children and stealing a car, an army commander told state radio.

“On their way back, they came face-to-face with Cameroonian soldiers but succeeded in shooting to death nine villagers and a soldier of the Rapid Intervention Brigade (BIR),” Albert Mekondane Obounou, senior divisional officer for the Logone and Chari region, told state radio.

The state radio did not disclose how many Boko Haram gunmen were killed or injured.

On 27 July, about 200  Boko Haram  gunmen attacked Kolotafa, another northern town in Cameroon, kidnapped the wife of country’s vice prime minister, Amadou Ali and also killed three persons. In a separate attack, they also kidnapped a religious leader, who doubles as the town’s mayor,  Seini Boukar Lamine, and five members of his family.

Since then,  Cameroon  introduced measures to increase security on its long jungle border with Nigeria, deploying more than 1,000 soldiers, but has failed to stop Boko Haram raids.

 President Paul Biya  also dismissed two senior army officers, after the first raid.
