Three goals in three first half minutes saw Arsenal return to winning ways at Aston Villa while Newcastle United got off the bottom of the table but remain without a win this season following a draw at home to Hull City today in the Premier League.

At Villa Park, Danny Welbeck scored his first goal as an Arsenal player as the Gunners recovered from a disappointing trip to Dortmund in the Champions League in midweek to get a second win so far in the league against Aston Villa.

The home side began the day in second place and came into the match having beat Liverpool last time out, and came close to taking the lead against Arsenal midway through the first half only for Wojciech Szczesny to keep out Ciaran Clark’s close range header.

That moment came back to be rued 10 minutes later by the Villans as Mesut Özil latched on to a defence splitting pass from Welbeck to put Arsenal ahead with his first goal of the season and first Premier League goal away from the Emirates Stadium.

Özil returned the favour a minute later when his low cross in from the left was smashed into the roof of the net by Welbeck, before a cross shot from Kieran Gibbs was turned in by Villa fullback Aly Cissoko to put Arsenal 3-0 up a minute after Welbeck’s goal.

The rest of the match saw Arsenal content with the score, keeping Villa at bay to claim a win which takes them to fourth for the moment with nine points from five matches, a point behind Villa that dropped to third with 10 points.

Elsewhere in the Premier League, pressure on Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew was eased ever so slightly as the Magpies came from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw at home to Hull City at St. James Park.

Following a goalless first half, Nikica Jelavic put Hull ahead with an eyecatching scissor-kicked volley four minutes into the second half while Mohamed Diame doubled the Tigers’ lead 20 minutes later with an effort from just outside the area into Tim Krul’s near post.

Diame’s goal was followed by the introduction of Cisse for Emmanuel Riviere a minute later as Pardew sought to salvage a result, and the Senegal international obliged with a drilled shot off a Cheick Tiote pass in the 74th minute and a close range tap-in off Yohan Gouffran’s heder across goal in the 87th minute.

The result lifted Newcastle to 18th on the table with three points after five matches though could return to the bottom of the league if Crystal Palace and West Brom avoid defeat at Everton and Tottenham Hotspur respectively on Sunday.

In other Premiee League matches played today, Queens Park Rangers twice came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw at home to Stoke City in the day’s early kick-off while Burnley was denied by the woodwork in a goalless draw at home to Sunderland.

And Southampton came away from Wales with a 1-0 win over Swansea City courtesy of Victor Wanyama’s second half strike; a first Premier League goal by a Kenyan which takes the Saints up to second with 10 points.
