The 25-year old, who joined from Atletico Madrid in June for £32m, claimed the award following four goals scored in the opening three matches of the league season.

Costa beat Chelsea teammate Cesc Fabregas, Aston Villa’s Andreas Weimann as well as Swansea City duo Nathan Dyer and midfielder Gylfi Sigurðsson to the August award.

Meanwhile, Swansea City manager Garry Monk claimed the monthly prize for the managers after guiding the Welsh club to a perfect start to the season so far.

The Swans began the season with a 2-1 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford before claiming further wins against West Brom and newly promoted Burnley.

Interestingly, Monk claimed the award ahead of Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho ahead of a meeting between both when Swansea visit league leaders Chelsea in a Premier League encounter this weekend.

Other managers that were in contention for the award were Aston Villa’s Paul Lambert and Steve Bruce of Hull City.
