World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hattrick and Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez scored a late brace as Real Madrid walloped Deportivo La Coruña 8-2 in a Primera Liga match at the Riazor today.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side have now scored 13 goals in their last two matches, going into the match at Deportivo following a 5-1 win over Basel in their opening UEFA Champions League group match in midweek.

Ronaldo gave Los Merengues the lead with a strong header just before the half-hour mark while James Rodriguez made it 2-0 soon after with a well struck effort into the top corner from the edge of the area.

A moment’s mix-up in the Deportivo defence saw Ronaldo score his second and Real’s third just before the break, shooting into an empty goal from long range after the Deportivo goalkeeper had come well off his line to challenge Karim Benzema for the ball.

Haris Medunjanin pulled one back for the home side with a penalty five minutes into the second half but a brace from Gareth Bale and Ronaldo completing his hattrick doused any hope of a comeback from the newly promoted side.

Jose Verdu Toche headed in a consolation for Deportivo six minutes from time but substitute Hernandez opened his Real Madrid account with a volley in the 86th minute and a deflected effort in the 88th minute to complete the rout.

The big win helped Real Madrid rise to sixth place on the La Liga table with six points for the moment, three points behind leaders and arch-rivals Barcelona that visit Levante on Sunday looking to maintain their perfect start to the season.
