Security operatives had a tough time organising the large crowd that attended the Eagle Square, Abuja, venue of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari’s declaration of his presidential ambition for the 2015 general elections.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the situation almost resulted to a stampede as the security personnel were, at a point, overwhelmed by the surging crowd.

The crowd began shouting in frenzy as the general arrived at the venue.

When the aspirant moved round the square to acknowledge cheers from supporters, there was a minor stampede as people fell atop themselves in the bid to catch a glimpse, wave or hail the aspirant.

There was however no serious injury.

The operatives, comprising the police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Federal Road Safety Commission, did not use force but only employed subtle approach in controlling the crowd.

Some of the side attractions at the square included several groups that came to campaign for their candidates for positions as governors, senators and others.

They danced around the square with posters showing joint pictures of Buhari and their candidates, beating drums, flutes, and even miniature vuvuzela to indicate their candidates’ intentions.

Different songs were rendered in various languages at the event and various cultural troupes performed.

Contrary to situations whereby pick pockets roam to see what they can get, missing wallets were announced at the stage for the owners to reclaim them
