Bayern Munich scored seven in Rome while Chelsea hit six in London as the former European champions cruised to big wins in their respective matches tonight in the UEFA Champions League.

With Manchester City squandering a two-goal lead in the 2-2 draw at CSKA Moscow earlier in Group E today, Bayern had the chance to go one match away from sealing passage to the knockout phase in the other group match in Rome.

The Germans came into the encounter on the back of a 6-0 crushing of Werder Bremen last weekend in the Bundesliga, and another rampant performance saw the Bavarians crush Roma 7-1 at the Stadio Olimpico.

A bright start by Bayern saw Robben put them ahead in the seventh minute, bending a low shot past Morgan De Sanctis after being put through on goal by a defence splitting one-two with Philipp Lahm.

Roma almost responded immediately, but Gervinho’s deflected shot was kept out by Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer two minutes later while Lewandowski forced a save from De Sanctis moments later at the other end.

Götze however got Bayern further ahead midway through the first when another defence splitting one-two – this time with Thomas Müller – set him up to slot into the bottom corner before Lewandowski’s header made it 3-0 for Bayern by the 25th minute.

Robben got his second of the night to make it 4-0 when he met a Lewandowski pass with a first-time shot in the 30th minute while Müller scored a penalty five minutes later to give Bayern a 5-0 lead by half-time.

Roma regrouped in the second half but initially found a breakthrough hard to come by, with Gervinho hitting the post before while substitute Alessandro Florenzi got denied by Neuer.

Neuer had to be alert to keep out a close range volley from Gervinho just after the hour mark but eventually was beaten by the Ivorian forward who headed in a Radja Nainggolan cross in the 65th minute.

Any hope of an unlikely revival was squashed however, as two goals in as many minutes from Franck Ribery and Xherdan Shaqiri sealed a comprehensive result for the Germans.

The result is Bayern’s biggest away win in the Champions League, helping to open a five point gap from second placed Roma and sustaining their 100% record after three matches.

Meanwhile in Group G, Eden Hazard scored twice while Löic Remy scored his first European goal for Chelsea in the 6-0 demolition of Maribor in Stamford Bridge to remain top of the group ahead of Schalke that won a seven goal-thriller against Sporting Lisbon.

Remy was picked out in the 13th minute by a long John Terry pass, which the Frenchman tucked in with a curling effort for Chelsea’s opener, going off moments later as he hurt his groin in the process of scoring.

Didier Drogba, who came on for the injured Remy, scored his first goal since returning to Stamford Bridge to double Chelsea’s lead midway through the first half with a penalty.

A swift counterattack from a Maribor cornerkick ended with Terry sliding in Chelsea’s third in the 30th minute while Mitja Viler’s own goal made it 4-0 for the home side 10 minutes into the second half.

Maribor had a chance to score a consolation just after the hour mark when Nemanja Matic brought Agim Ibraimi down in the area, only for Ibraimi to miss the resultant penalty.

Oscar sent close moments later while Willian struck the woodwork in the 75th minute as the Blues searched for more goals, which Hazard obliged with two in the closing 11 minutes.

The Belgian midfielder got his first with a 79th minute penalty after Branislav Ivanovic was fouled in the area, going on to seal the demolition with a curling effort in the 90th minute.

The result, Chelsea’s biggest in Europe, puts Jose Mourinho’s side on seven points atop Group G, two points ahead of Schalke that came from a goal down to claim a dramatic win at home to 10-man Sporting Lisbon.

On-loan Manchester United midfielder Nani gave Sporting a 16th minute lead, only for the Portuguese side to lose Mauricio who received his marching orders 16 minutes later following two yellow cards.

The numerical advantage initially played in Schalke’s favour as goals from Chinedu Obasi and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar either side of half-time turned the game around for the German side.

Defender Benedikt Howedes then made it 3-1 to Schalke on the hour mark but a brace from Adrien Silva in the 64th and 78th minute remarkably brought Sporting back on level terms.

With the match destined for a draw, substitite Eric Maxim Choupo stole the win for Schalke with a stoppage time penalty as Roberto di Matteo’s side picked a first win in the group stage.
