Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has stated that his Argentine midfielder Angel di Maria will be fit for this weekend’s Premier League clash at home to league leaders Chelsea.

Di Maria had been deemed a doubt for the big match on Sunday, after missing a training session due to a thigh strain picked up in Monday’s 2-2 draw at West Brom.

Van Gaal however dispelled speculation over the Argentine’s fitness, stating that ”Di Maria said after the game that it wasn’t so heavy and it’s not. It was only the first day he didn’t train, so it’s no problem.”

The Dutch tactician also revealed Ander Herrera will be fit for Chelsea’s visit but effectively ruled out a return for Michael Carrick in the match after a long spell on the sidelines.

Of Carrick, Van Gaal said ”I’m sorry to say no other players are back, [Carrick will] play in London for the reserves because [one] needs to play matches when you are five months injured.”

The Red Devils face Chelsea looking to avoid going further behind the Blues who already hold a 10-point lead on Van Gaal’s side after just eight matches.

The Man. United manager also denied rumours linking former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes with a free transfer to Old Trafford, having started training with the club as he looks to regain some fitness from a long injury layoff.

”It is not a surprise [being linked to Valdes] because I have done it with lots of players. I have a relationship with a lot of them. I gave Ronald de Boer and Edgar Davids training possibilities in the past – Valdes is one of these players.” Van Gaal said.
