Confederation of African Football (CAF) have officially approached Ghana to replace Morocco as hosts of 2015 African Cup of Nations following the latter’s withdrawal of its hosting rights late on Wednesday.

This was revealed by Ghana’s Minister of Youth and Sport Mahama Ayariga in a tweet on Thursday afternoon, stating ”The Confederation of African Football have officially asked Ghana to consider hosting the 2015 African Cup of Nations.”

”The government of Ghana is considering this call.” Ayariga added of CAF’s approach to host the tournament which is scheduled to hold between January 17 and February 8 next year.

Morocco had requested for the tournament to be postponed over fears of the ebola viral disease based on a report from the World Health Organistion (WHO), a request which the CAF executive committee is expected to discuss on November 2 in Algiers.

Moroccan Sports Minister Mohamed Ouzzine meanwhile has denied the north African nation has withdrawn its hosting rights, stating ”Some people are trying to create problems between us and CAF.”

Ouzzine had earlier stated Morocco would not oppose a transfer of hosting rights.

There had been reports that CAF President Issa Hayatou had met with South Africa Football Association (SAFA) President Danny Jordaan for South Africa to consider coming in as replacement for Morocco.

Egypt have also signified interest in replacing Morocco as hosts, with a decision from CAF over the issue expected soon.
