The Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Dr Adewale Omirin, on Friday asked members of the parliament to proceed on a one-month recess following the change of baton in the executive arm of the government.

The former APC-led government of Ayo Fayemi on Thursday handed over the executive arm to newly-elected Gov. Ayo Fayose of the PDP.

A statement by the Speaker, signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Wole Olujobi, announced that the 26 legislators of the assembly shall proceed on a month recess.

The statement said it was in line with the current mood of the state.

The speaker said following the change of baton between one governor and the other, there was the need for the lawmakers to go on recess and study the situation to move the state forward.

But a top member of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sen. Bode Ola, in a reaction to the recess, faulted its timing.

The former APC senator, who represented Ekiti Central Senatorial District, defected recently to PDP.

He told NAN in Ado-Ekiti that the speaker might have ordered the house recess out of fear.

“We know that some elements in the assembly are not comfortable with the way and manner six APC lawmakers in one swell swoop defected to PDP on the day of Mr. Ayo Fayose’s inauguration.

“It is a well known fact that the development sent jitters to the assembly’s top hierarchy because they are not sure of what may happen next,” he said.

Ola, however, said though the law permited the speaker to determine whether or not the assembly should sit.

The senator urged both the assembly and others who were yet to come to reality of the new era in Ekiti to team up with the governor to demonstrate their love for Ekiti’s progress and development.
