A governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, on Wednesday said that the race for the party’s governorship slot was a competition and not a war.

Speaking with newsmen at a meet the press forum organised by the Lagos State chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Hamzat said that the party’s primaries would come and go without any rancour.

Hamzat, who is presently the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure in Lagos, also said that the issue of religion and zoning should not be used to determine who picks the party’s ticket.

He said that emphasis should rather be placed on a candidate that could deliver.

The aspirant said that as an experienced politician, he was confident of clinching the APC ticket at the primary election on Dec. 2.

“I will not only clinch the APC ticket, I am confident that I will become the next governor of Lagos State,’’ he said.

Hamzat said that being the son of a politician, he understood politics and would deploy his knowledge to come out tops.

He described politicking as a process and said he was just following that process.

Hamzat also spoke on the mode in which the party’s candidate should emerge.

“The party can initiate any process in the choice of its governorship candidate, but for me, I see the race as a healthy competition.

“Picking a candidate by consensus is okay but I will suggest that everybody should be allowed to campaign and primaries should be done.

“At the end of the day when the primary is done, somebody will emerge as winner and those who didn’t win will support the winner.

“And then, we move on to support our party to beat the opposition hands down,” he said.

Hamzat said that he had the experience needed to take Lagos to greater heights.

According to him, Lagos State has made giant strides but there is room for improvement.
