Twelve aspirants will Thursday battle for the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Lagos State, western Nigeria, the party’s stronghold.

After months of horse-trading and politicking, the stage is set for the final showdown.

Political pundits have dubbed Thursday as ‘judgment day,’ while others see it as Decision Day, because the next governor of Lagos State in 2015 may as well be determined tomorrow at the APC primary holding at Onikan Stadium in Lagos Island.

Those vying for the ticket are Senator Ganiu Olanrewaju Solomon, GOS; former Accountant General of Lagos, Akinwunmi Ambode; Lagos Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr. Kadri Hamzat; and former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Supo Sasore.

Other gladiators are Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Adeyemi Ikuforiji; former Commissioner for Health, Dr. Leke Pitan; former Commissioner for Special Duties, Dr. Tola Kasali; Mr. Abayomi Sutton; former Chief Details to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Mr Tayo Ayinde; Lanre Ope, Adetokunbo Wahab and the only female among them, Adetokunbo Tobun-Agbesanwa.

Political pundits predict a rowdy scene at the stadium, with all the delegates having to be bussed to the venue, instead of voting in their respective local councils.

It is still uncertain who out of the candidates will get the ticket with the incumbent governor of Lagos state rumoured not to be supporting the same aspirant that the Big Man of Lagos politics, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is supporting.

Governor Fashola is said to be rooting for Supo Sasore, a former justice commissioner in the state. Dr. Kadiri Hamzat, his former works commissioner is also said to enjoy his support, but Hamzat’s position is said to have been affected by his father’s kingship in a community in Ewekoro in Ogun state.

Tinubu however favours Akinwunmi Ambode and tomorrow will decide whether he still controls the party machine in the state, as he has done the past 15 years.
