Governor of the Nigerian eastern state of Rivers, Chibuike Amaechi has given the workers in the state an assurance of prompt payment of their salaries, including the December salaries to enable them go home and celebrate Christmas.

Speaking to labour union executives and members at the weekend, at the commissioning ceremony of the secretariat complex built by the Rivers State Chapter of Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria at Rumuagholu, Port Harcourt, Amaechi said his administration has been labour friendly, protecting the interests of labour unions and members in the state.

Amaechi said federal allocations to states had depleted to the point that in a bid to struggle to pay workers, government has been spending a chunk of state funds.

He however pointed out that in spite of financial handicap faced by the government, his administration has managed to ensure judicious use of the scarce resources to meet the needs of the people of the State.

On governorship post in the state, Amaechi reiterated the need for rotation of power among the ethnic groups in the state to ensure justice and fair play.
