The event was the 2014 edition of the Ogun State Christmas Carol and Service of Nine Lessons at the popular June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta, the state capital. Some of the invited guests including the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, had addressed the crowd that gathered to be part of the event. Then former President Olusegun Obasanjo was called upon to talk to the people.

As he stepped out, some would have expected to hear him talk about the many challenges in the country and maybe bring up some controversies. Trust Obasanjo to be very unpredictable. He got hold of the microphone, told the people that he had nothing much to say other than to align himself with Papa Adeboye.

However, the only thing the former President would say about Nigeria, he did through a song that summarised the yearnings and aspiration of many of the country’s citizens: that the country needs God’s intervention urgently especially as the 2015 general elections draw close. The country’s situation warrants calls on God to do something new and very quickly.

“I and the governor have agreed that all what Baba Adeboye said here tonight is what all of us have said. There is no more word. But you will assist me to sing this song, Nigeria needs something new this time around.

“The song goes thus: ‘do something new in my life and do something new in this country’,” Obasanjo began with a crowd that jubilated and shouted “Sai Buhari” as Obasanjo continued his song.

Earlier in his message, Pastor Adeboye agreed that the country was facing a predicament with a solution that only God could engineer. Taking his sermon from the Book of John, Chapter 14 verses 6, Adeboye urged Nigerians to seek God’s face for a solution to their personal or collective issues.

He told them: “Jesus is the way, the life and the truth, no one gets to my fatherexcept through Him. But let me take one of the three names; Way, Life and Truth; the one I’m taking tonight is the Way…He is the Prince of Peace, all things shall be done in the name of Jesus.

“Anyone going through any storm today, I decree that it will be still. The present situation we’ve found ourselves as individuals and as a nation, only God is the solution. Jesus is the way out, He is the way in, way forward and the way upward, and not that alone, He is the way where there is no way, the way out of trouble and the way into joy.

“I want to admonish us all to hold God firmly as He is the only way who can heal any ailments in us. Jesus is a great promoter, He is the only one that can promote you and stand by you, promotion from any human being cannot be seen as everlasting one…they will be looking for another way or a mistake from your end to run you down completely.

“Lift your eyes and hands onto God as He alone can lift and promote you without any hindrances. Human promotion cannot go beyond the limit of the tallest of the person. As a nation, only God can promote us from sorrow to joy, from difficulty to happiness, from little to plenty and from fear to peace.”

The event which lasted for over five hours had in attendance most of the big spiritual leaders in the country and led by Dr. S.K. Abiara, the General Evangelist of the Christ Apostolic Church Worldwide, they prayed for the state, the nation and especially called on God to take control of next year’s general elections in the country and ensure that peace and tranquility to reign. Also, the closing prayer and Benediction was done by Pastor W.F. Kumuyi, the General Superintendent, Deeper Christian Life Ministry.
