President Goodluck Jonathan visited Nigeria’s former military president, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida in Minna, Niger State capital today.

The purpose was not stated, we can only hazard guesses. One of them is that President Jonathan went to Minna to wish Babangida well, almost two months after Babangida returned to Nigeria on 1 November after spending close to two months in Germany for medicare.

But the political dimension of the visit was not lost as Senator Ahmadu Ali, a former army colonel and Chairman of the Jonathan-Sambo re-election campaign was in the entourage.

Was the visit a charm offensive, to get the amiable general, called Maradona behind the campaign?

There is nothing that cannot be done to win votes, like renaming Liberty Stadium and University of Lagos. In this Christmastide, the visit should have been the other way round. We are talking about the President.
