It is now crystal clear that next February’s 2015 presidential election in Nigeria will be a rematch between President Goodluck Jonathan of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party and Nigeria’s former military Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress.

Both men had slugged it out in 2011, with Jonathan clinching victory.

With counting of ballots almost reaching an end at the Teslim Balogun Stadium venue of the APC’s National Convention, in Lagos, Muhammadu Buhari’s vote tally was 3,430 out of the 5,992 votes cast.

Governor Rochas Okorocha and Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso made a surprise show of strength at the convention, thrashing bookmakers’ prediction of a two-horse race between Buhari and former Nigerian vice-president, Atiku Abubakar.

Abubakar ended up disappointingly in the third position, with 954 votes, about 2500 short of delegates votes amassed by Buhari.

Kwankwaso got 974 votes to come second and Rochas Okorocha got 624 votes to end up fourth. Sam Nda Isaiah got just 10 votes. Sixteen votes were also declared invalid.

In all, fewer than 5,992 votes were cast at the convention, out of 7,214 accredited delegates.

Atiku Abubakar swiftly congratulated General Muhammadu Buhari on his emergence as the presidential candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC), noting that, he deserves to win.

In a tweet on his page, Atiku wrote: “Congratulations General Buhari. The delegates have spoken, you fully deserve the victory.”
