Several military officers have been arrested in a foiled military coup in the Gambian capital Banjul, military sources said Tuesday.

Sources also said that no fewer than five soldiers were killed in the heavy shooting in the capital.

There were reports of many injuries as well, after a foiled mutiny against the 20 year old government of President Yahya Jammeh.

Lt Colonel Lamin Sanneh, the ring leader, is reported to have sustained serious injuries during the gun fight.

“The attacks took place at State House and Denton Bridge,” said both military and senior government officials.

Soldiers who sustained serious injuries are being treated at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in Banjul.

Vehicles were not allowed to enter into the capital.

Heavy check points were mounted at the entrance of the capital, and commercial vehicles and other transport were also not allowed entry, the Chinese news agency, Xinhua said.

“The state house was attacked by the un-loyal forces to the state between the hours of 2 a.m. to 3 a.m.,” the military sources who declined to be named told Xinhua.

The Gambian leader is currently in Dubai for a four day working visit. He was initially said to be in France.

He will run for his 5th term as presidential candidate in 2016.
