Governor Idris Wada of Kogi state has approved the immediate dissolution of the executive councils of all the 21 local governments in the state, 10 days after a high court ordered him to do so.

The Permanent Secretary in the state Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr James Adedoyin said the governor’s action is in compliance with the order by Justice Alaba Omolaiye – Ajileye.

The court sitting in Koton Karfe had on Dec. 17 issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the state government to comply with its earlier order made on December 8.

Adedoyin’s statement directed the chairmen to hand over the affairs of their respective councils to the directors of local government.

It said that the directors would be in charge until new elections are conducted.

Wada, in the statement, called on all concerned to ensure strict compliance with the directive, appealing to all citizens to be law abiding and go about their normal duties without fear.

Omolaiye- Ajileye had earlier delivered judgment in a case instituted against the state government and the Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission (KOSIEC).

In the judgment, the judge faulted the process leading to the conduct of the May 4, 2013 local government elections that brought the chairmen and councillors into office.

The court specifically ruled that the membership of the SIEC that conducted the election was constituted contrary to the provisions of the 1999 constitution (as amended).
