President Goodluck Jonathan has held behind closed doors a meeting with Nigeria’s security chiefs and governors of the Boko Haram besieged, north east states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.

The meeting came few days after Boko Haram dealt another devastating blow on Nigeria’s territorial integrity by sacking Nigerian troops, and other multi-national forces from the border town of Baga. The Boko haram fighters also flushed Nigerian troops out of their military camp and many soldiers had to run to Chad to seek refuge.

The attack weekend led to the death of 11 soldiers and scores of civilians, triggering fresh questions about the capacity of Nigeria’s military to contain Boko Haram insurgency.

At the moment, 13 local councils, across Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states are under the control of Boko Haram.

The insurgents, fighting to install an Islamic state in Nigeria, have also been dispatching suicide bombers to towns such a Gombe, Bauchi and Kano, although with minimal impact.

President Jonathan continues to promise that he would bring the insurgency under control, but time seems to be running out.

Nigeria has scheduled a general election for 14 February and 28 February, with all indications pointing at the fact that some areas of Nigeria would not be able to vote.
