PDP Not Interested In Issues-Based Campaign

Tuesday, January 27, 2015 2:07 pm

Mallam Garba Shehu is the Directorate of Media and Publicity APC Presidential Campaign Organisation. In this interview with AYORINDE OLUOKUN, he spoke about mudslinging campaign against Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) and other issues

Against all hopes that the campaigns for the 2015 elections will be issues based, it has become a mudslinging battle between the All Progressives Congress, APC and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. How did it come to this as somebody who has been involved in this campaign?

I think there is a need to make a slight correction- it is mudslinging by the PDP, not between APC and PDP. APC is not mudslinging the President or the PDP. APC campaign is purely based on issues. Since this campaign started, General Buhari has not for a single day mounted the rostrum to mention Mr. Jonathan or Mrs. Jonathan, Mr. Sambo or Mrs. Sambo and attack them. You can review all the tapes of these rallies. And Buhari’s charge to the Presidential Campaign Council when he inaugurated all of us was that “I have not mandated anybody to sort of go and abuse or attack any other person. Anyone among you who does that is a fifth columnist; he belong to the enemy camp.

•Mallam Garba Shehu

So, yes, there is a negative campaign going on but it is by PDP as you can see by the newspapers of Monday where the PDP expressed a death wish for General Buhari. And as I speak to you now, the party and the candidate are trying to calm down followers, telling them that don’t react, because if you react, then PDP has won because that is exactly what they want. They don’t have anything to tell you for the six or so years of the President in office. They have no record to present; neither do they have a record to defend. They want, given the chance, to either create a situation where there will be no election at all or if it takes place, it will be in such chaotic environment, that it would not be credible. They would have rigged it. So, we are saddened by the fact that barely one week after the so called Abuja accord was signed by all the candidates, committing themselves to peaceful electioneering, the PDP has descended to a low that we have seen before, fabricating health certificates from ABU which the University has denied and beyond that, now publishing advertorials asking Nigerians to choose between life and death. And they put General Buhari’s picture with a big question mark, saying ‘what happens to him next,’ after presenting the pictures of former Heads of State who have been killed in office or died in the case of Yar’Adua from natural circumstances.

The question mark on Buhari is to say is he next? And the advertisers are saying we are tired of state funerals. So, we have a serious problem and I think that Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria which approves all advertisements before they are published must explain to Nigerians why a death message was published in an advert on the front pages of newspapers. The State Security Services, the Police who are always very keen on doing their duties when it comes to dealing with the opposition I think also have explanations to offer on this situation.

But what is the APC going to do in respect of the advertorials which you said is like wishing death for the candidate of your party?

People who are expecting APC to go and buy advert pages for similar gutter advert with death threats will be disappointed. Our candidate will not permit this kind of thing to be done against Mr. Jonathan or his family. What we are saying is that the law enforcement agencies should do their duty. Our plea to our supporters is that we are on the home run, PDP is scared with it back against the wall and they know that they are losing this election. So, they would rather bring down the roof than fold their hands and watch themselves being humiliated out of office. So, having known this then, the big challenge for us is to make sure that we keep our supporters in line, that they are not provoked, that they don’t react irrationally to this death threat on General Buhari.

Some of the issues are very simple and it will seem as if APC had responded PDP would not have been able to make it an issue, for example, if General Buhari had applied to the military and obtained copies of his certificate and made them available to the media, the controversies would have ended there…

Let me tell you this, even if the certificate issue is settled today, they will look for another thing. In the last 24 hours, it was health. After health, maybe it will be the kind of dresses General Buhari is wearing or shoes that he is not wearing the kind of shoes that the PDP want him to wear. They must stay on these inconsequential matters because they don’t want spotlight to be on corruption, security, Chibok girls, Boko Haram, economy. Look at this fuel thing- the price of petrol has fallen by half all over the world. The USA has reduced the price of petrol by half but they are giving us 10 per cent. Who is keeping the balance of 40 per that they are taking from me and you?

They don’t want us to talk about these things; they don’t want us to talk about jobs for our teeming youths. These are the issues in this election and PDP has no answers for them. So, I bet you Buhari can bring whatever certificates he has, he can bring the most credible medical report, PDP will still go and look for the manner of his speech and the way he walks or his family members, you know that kind of thing. So, they are not interested in issues because they have nothing to defend.

You’ve been in the thick of this campaign. Do you really think the APC has chance against PDP?

The chances have never been this bright for any opposition political party in the country. Do you know that some weeks ago, they couldn’t open APC office in Bayelsa when the flags were up, even the Police could not secure APC office because of the massive crowd that our presidential campaign drew in Bayelsa. I was with them. In Calabar, people were beating drums, young people were walking on foot following our convoy, from the Airport to the venue of the rally. So, the thing is that you can almost feel and touch the sense of urgency for change in the feeling of Nigerians who want change now. They are doing billboards, spending billions of naira on billboards. If you are driving from the Airport, every lamplight on the road has two wings of Jonathan’s photograph. You can no longer listen to radio; it is boring watching some of these independent television stations and not to talk of the ones owned by government. But the surprising thing is that they are not making any impact because Nigerians are not listening. So, the journey to the change has begun and from every indication, Nigerians are not willing to turn back.

But don’t you think this muckraking may affect General Buhari at the polls as it may influence the way many perceive him?

No, in fact, what is happening is that the more they do this, the more they are alienating themselves from the Nigerian public. That’s what they don’t realise.

BUHARI IS A CURRUPT AND HYPOCRITE ….BuharI as Chairman of PTF: The Presidential Trust Fund(PTF) was set up by General Abacha to salvage s the decaying infrastructure of utilities all over the country. On March 21st 1995 when the Board of PTF was formally inaugurated in Abuja, Major-General Buhari was named the Executive Chairman. The activities of PTF straddles the entire gamut of utilities such as education, water supplies, marine transport, health, roads, pharmaceuticals and the like. Although the PTF was heavily funded to salvage the utilities on a nation-wide basis, Buhari restricted his activities to the North of Nigeria , thus validating the fact that he is, indeed, a religious/ethnic irredentist. While one can detect heavy capital intensive projects built by PTF in the Muslim North, in the South East, there are no traces of any surviving vestiges of projects which can attest that there was such a project as PTF in Nigeria. He was so clannish that he deployed the humongous PTF budget to developing the infrastructure in the North while turning a blind eye to the utilities in the South of Nigeria, A person with such deplorable and depraved fundamentals is not my idea of the Messiah Nigerians are looking for. Above all, there is empirical evidence that the major contractor to PTF was his brother in-law who enjoyed a lion share of the PTF contracts.#GEJ4NAIJA

Buhari is a controversial figure, a man who is conflicted and truly does not have the interest of the nation at heart. No true patriot of the Nigerian state would standby while miscreants and thugs burn parts of the nation and murder hundreds on their behalf. There appears to be no difference between Buhari’s abatement of violence and death and Laurent Gbagbo’s defiant stance in Ivory Coast that led to the deaths of thousands of his countrymen. Buhari wants to be president at all cost but has not taken the time to fertilize the ground to reap aplenty in the harvest. @NO2BUHARI

  • solzil says:

Buhari said he would fight corruption and jail every corrupt Nigerian and politician who has stolen from the nation’s treasury, would he also prosecute those people who have sponsored his campaign and send them to jail? because you and I know who these guys are, and you can’t tell me they are perfect and would not be found wanting. Can he throw every corrupt politician, past and present in jail, knowing fully well, they made him President? By the way, who would be ruling this country, is it Buhari or Tinubu, Atiku, Okorocha and Amaechi? Does Buhari have the will and courage to say no to these people when he wants to make his decisions that they may not share with him? Can he be like Jonathan who stopped listening to Obasanjo and made his decisions as the President? Can Buhari do all these?

My fear is not Buhari, my fear is the people around and behind him, they look to me, that they are only presenting Buhari as a mere figure head, and when he eventually wins, they will be the ones to rule this nation.

Please think twice before you put this country into another deep mess, because the APC hired a good campaign strategist who has succeeded in blindfolding Nigerians into believing that the APC and Buhari mean well and are the change for Nigeria only so we are trapped in another four years of even worse turmoils. It is better you stick to the man you all know for once who won’t trample on your rights and freedom, who won’t let anyone push him around, and makes his decisions with his team of experts who are steering this nation on course.

We have seen what Jonathan can do and cannot do, there is nothing surprising he would do to us, don’t vote for a party who criticises corruption and the PDP, but are so quick to embrace any defecting PDP member into their folks. The same PDP which is termed corrupt and a failure by the APC, when their defectors come to your party, you embrace these same corrupt men, and they try to sell them to us, we are wiser than that.

Don’t be decieved by the change you hear, it’s fake, yes you will get change if Buhari wins, but what kind of change? The one where the President is not the boss, but answers to the boss or a group of people who are the bosses.I want to remind us about the fact. A lot of us say this has nothing to do with ethnicity and tribalism, but believe me it has everything to do with ethnicity and tribalism, when I speak in favour of Jonathan, people tell me, it’s because I am a Southerner and Jonathan is a Southerner, if he was a Northerner would you support him, and defend him? Frankly, if Jonathan was a Northerner, do you think the North will call for his head the way they are calling for it now? No they will cover his deeds up, they will defend and protect him, they will find nothing wrong in what he is doing, why? Because he is one of them, because he is their brother, and because they believe they own this country and have the right to rule anyhow they want and anytime they want because power belongs to them, but let me remind you all, that for over 40 years, the north has been ruling this country, they brought us to the dilapidated state we were, they laid the foundation of the problems we have in this nation, and just when God chose someone from the south south to rule, they feel he has destroyed this nation, and they have the nerve to attack his convoy, and the most ridiculous thing is we the Southerners are turning against our brother and claiming he is not our brother, who told you the north will ever consider you their brother? How many Northerners have done terribly despotic and tyrannical things in Nigeria, and how many Northerners, rose up to condemn them? Northern Presidents/Heads of State has deprived us of democracy five times, and nobody atttacked their convoys or said any condemning words against them. Have we forgotten about the national conference which has been successfully organised and very critical issues affecting the state of our nation discussed, and a resolution made, despite the frantic effort of the North to thwart this conference so that the truth about our nation would not be told? Have we forgotten the successful privatisation of the PHCN, something that has always been in the plan of Nigeria but will always be marred by corruption, but Jonathan succeeded in that, and we are in the path to revolutionising the power sector in Nigeria. wasn’t he Obasanjo who brought in Jonathan? Didn’t he tell us Jonathan was the right man for the job? Because a child has suddenly decided to be a man, and start making his decisions, the old man thinks he has failed Nigerians.

I think it is hightime I expressed my political views. There is no doubt that Buhari’s campaign is doing very well, Offcourse the APC is playing a good game of politics since they hired the Barack Obama’s campaign strategist, and today Buhari is being sold to Nigerians as an agent of change. I wouldn’t blame the APC for a job well done, because it’s politics, and the ability of a politician to cajoule the people to your side is what matters at the end of the day.

I want to say I am disappointed in Nigerians, who have very short term memory, who are only looking at the biscuit-bone being dangled in front of them, and are so myopic to conspicuously see the handwriting on the wall. We are here saying Jonathan has failed us, what has he done in the past six years given to him? We have refused to look at the Freedom of information bill that was passed since 1999, but has been waiting for the Presidential assent for it to become a law, and Jonathan signed that bill into law and today, you and I can even go as far as abusing the same man who gave us the right to freedom of expression, freedom to have access to any information at any given time, without being killed or molested. Today, we have about 12 Federal Universities added to the ones we had before, and the Al majiri school for the northern Al majiri children, today, Nigeria has surpassed South Africa to be Africa’s largest economy with a nominal GDP of about $594.257 Billion dollars making us 21st, and GDP (PPP) $1.058 Trillion Dollars, making us the 20th largest economy in the world. #GEJ4NAIJA

  • Tega Adebayo says:

first and foremost I want to really state here that i’m disappointed when I hear our politicians talk in the manner mallam shehu garba has spoken, and It baffles me why men like him cannot tell Nigerians and even themselves the truth even in the face of the public, how can you say the PDP has no records to present or records to defend in the six years or more they have spent, when the records are so glearing, on papers, the medias even on our streets, yes they might not have given Nigerians everything expected which no party or candidate can for the 4years they are clamouring for not even your so called APC or General Muhammadu Buhari, the only team that can assure us that to a large extent is the PDP and President GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN and SAMBO’s team because of continuity of purpose and structures already on ground, now you re talking of a death threat, did president jonathan or PDP make the death threat and insuinating messages? someone woke up on a morning and decided to air his opinion how does that concern MR PRESIDENT and PDP, except you are telling me that whatever negative comment you have made on the PDP and President Jonathan’s team here is a direct message from the APC and Gen.Buhari, in that case you ve also contradicted your earlier comments about APC and Buhari not making negative comments on the president, wife and PDP, please, sometimes I wonder if elders do not say the truth anymore but my father at home does or is it because he is not a politician, but I know a politician who has stood for the truth, President Jonathan, at least he tells us the truth of what he has done and failed to do,they say he that comes to equity should come with cleans hands, you re accusing PDP of not keeping to the Abuja accord, whereas its the APC and its supporters that are busy attacking the PDP and not keeping to the signed accord or how else will you explain the attack on Mr President’s convoy during visits to some northern states and Gov.Rotimi’s attempt to stop PDP from having presidential campaign in porthacort stadium, same stadium used by APC for theirs, we re suppose to be friends and not enemies, if you are so sure of feb 14 then just wait till then and stop making unnecessary issues like Rotimi amaechi, if you do not want the PDP to pick up on issues then do what is right, buhari should provide his certificate when needed and not wait for inec to discover its not there and ask for it, and provide his medical report and clear the air or keep quiet and not complain, but as long as things are not done right and at the right time PDP have the right to complain or get clearification as long as it concerns feb 14, because when you do the right thing @the wrong time its definitely wrong. NB don’t be deceived by the crowds and applause @ APC rallies, most of those people are doing it for the money. Nigerians re not stupid. #GEJ4Naija

The person is either blind to see what President Goodluck Jonathan’s government has achieved in the past 4 years of administration or that the person is deaf to hear all the issues-based and promising words of OUR President in his present campaign in all the states of Nigeria. Which Nigerian President has ever created the number of Al-majiri schools in northern Nigeria as President Jonathan did? Which part of the country are the most beneficiaries of GEJ’s present Agricultural transformation? The answer is THE NORTH. In the transport sector, Kano-Kaduna-Lagos railway has been revived under GEJ’s PDP government. Only in the North did the GEJ under PDP government established 6 new Universities, and 3 in the Southern part of the country. This is just to mention a few. Without attaching any form of sentiment i would say Mallam Garba ought to have taken certain things into consideration before making such heavy comments, to start with there is no proof whatsoever that the so called ‘Buhari’s death wish poster’ was actually made by the PDP, president Jonathan. But on a more serious note it’s high time somebody sincerely speaks the truth, i would say whoever is responsible for the advertorials in certainly not far from the truth, you don’t expect a 72 years old man with series of health issues to successfully bear the burden of a nation as complex as Nigeria for a whole four years, he is most likely going to break down in the process, but to an extent i would say that mallam Garba is only doing what he’s being paid to do (defend the APC no matter what), but if we must all tell our selves the truth, General Buhari should continue to act as an elder-statesman that he is and allow President Jonathan carry on with his good works if he truly has the interest of this great country at heart, A ruler like President Jonathan doesn’t come by easily so we should all work together to make sure he finishes the marvelous works he has already started. Johnathan remains loyal both in his party and his administration because he is a reliable and patriotic Nigerian who is slow to anger and can not even harm a fly ‘while buhari has been known for party cross carpeting as if he’s a prostitude he keeps jumping from one party to the other from ANPP to CPC and now APC is he a Lunard or that desperate? is it not clear to you mallam garba shehu that this so called buhari is unreliable and unpatriotic? #NO2Buhari

Mallam Garba shehu, looking at this issues very well i think there is a mixed up somewhere because i don’t know why a responsible gentleminded and God fearing man like Mr President will be wishing his fellow running mate dead, what will he gain from it? and come to think of it again jonathan is not the one owing the media company neither he is the one giving articles to the media to publish on newspaper, so i think mallam Garba shehu or what so ever he called himself is getting it all wrong here and its very very bad pointing accusing finger to PDP and Mr President on issues they don’t know anything about all in the name of Politics, i think PDP as a whole deserve apology from mallam Garba Shehu for laying false allegation against them. PDP is for peace and not for violence, and Mr President is Daddy peace and again in his word he said and i quote ”They don’t have anything to tell you for the six or so years of the President in office” What about 12 Federal Universities added to the ones we had

Many respect mallam, but as the directorate of the media and publicity of the APC presidential candidate the only question that comes to heart after reading through ur interview is thus IS THIS AN ISSUE THAT CONCERNS THE AVERAGE NIGERIAN OR THIS IS JUST ANOTHER WAY OF PLAYING THE DIRTY POLITICS??? if your presumptions are right i feel you should let us the masses be the judge over this case and focus on the issues that affect us as Nigerians, not pointing fingers while doing the same thing, for me this is just another move by some desperate politiains under the group called APC looking for every available means to talk bad about our leader and the head of the Nigerian family…
pls mallam go and strategise on ways that the Buhari/Osibanjo government will affect the various parts of the economy, their vision for the youths, women and Nigerian children, the unemployed and unskilled youth, the students and graduate community. i pray that the ALMIGHTY ALLAH will grants you the grace and on that faithful day would give us our PRESIDENT GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN to continue the good strides insha ALLAH. #GEJ4NAIJA #GEJWINSIT #GEJMYVAL

Mallam Garba Shehu who is the Directorate of Media and Publicity APC Presidential Campaign Organisation need to mind what he says because you don’t say what you don’t know all in the name of politics.

  • al hassan says:

Have we forgotten that in the 70s and 80s, Nigeria’s economic mainstay was Agriculture, and by the late 90s and early 20s, Agriculture had been relegated to the fore, with oil accounting for 80% of our economy, but in 2014, President Jonathan boosted the Agricultural sector tremendously with it contributing 35% to our GDP, second after oil, fertilisers are being distributed to farmers at subsidised rates, and corruption in the fertilizer distribution completely eradicated with the introduction of ICT in the distribution process.

Have we forgotten the facelift of our airports? Have we forgotten the stance we took on homosexuality? Have we forgotten the electoral reform he made, such that today, Nigerians are very optimistic that the election will be free and fair, with others even tipping victory for Buhari, because Jonathan has made the electoral system to be trusted once more, unlike the previous years when an incumbent will boast that the election is a do or die affair, and nobody can do anything about it, as the elections are clearly rigged in our very before, and we all had to just accept it.

Today we have a President who believes in the rule of law, who believes in the supremacy of the Nigerian citizen, who believes in freedom, and rights for every Nigerian, yet, we call him a weakling, simply because he is not using force and aggression to rule us, and make us do things against our wills. Despite all these we say Jonathan has done nothing in the past six years, he has made the nation worse, he has done this and done that, yet we refuse to accept the books of the world Bank that Nigeria is the largest Africa economy, and we hear questions like “How is being the largest economy in Africa translated to your pocket?” but we don’t pause to see people building houses and buying cars and taking exotic trips around the world every now and then, if the economy weren’t good, where would we all get that money to live the outrageously extravagant and opulent lives we live and see everyday?

I want to remind us about the fact.

Obasanjo today is talking how Jonathan has failed Nigerians and promised he was only going for a single tenure, what about him who swore to an oath of office to every Nigerian and the world which was watching, to rule for two tenures, and then when he completed his two terms in office, he took our resources, to start canvassing for how he could amend the constitution so he could come for a third term, and today he has the teremity and gusto to ask Jonathan not to to contest again, someone that is constitutionally empowered to go two terms, and Nigerians have all of a sudden forgotten he contributed to this mess, and are busy listening to the Ota man because he has alligned with the north to paint Jonathan as the devil. Some people do not deserve to utter a word in this country, wasn’t he Obasanjo who brought in Jonathan? Didn’t he tell us Jonathan was the right man for the job? Because a child has suddenly decided to be a man, and start making his decisions, the old man thinks he has failed Nigerians.

And this is my fear for Buhari, the man is simple, he doesn’t have the money a typical Nigerian politician has, he is being supported by the likes of Tinubu, Atiku, Okorocha, Amaechi, etc, who are seriously funding his campaign, now Nigerians tell me, if Buhari who told Nigerians that he has no money, and took a loan from the bank to buy his Presidential form, and is today, organising one of the best campaigns in Nigeria, knowing fully well he has no money and campaigns are exorbitant (expensive), isn’t it rather obvious that the likes of Tinubu, Amaechi, Atiku, Okorocha and co are funding his campaign? If Buhari wins as President tomorrow, would he have the courage to resist the overwhelming influence and control of these political juggernauts? How can he implement the plan he has for Nigeria, when these men have heavily sponsored his presidential bid?

The one where the President is not the boss, but answers to the boss or a group of people who are the bosses.

Be careful, and be warned, so next four years you don’t start remembering Jonathan and wishing he was the President.

Shun the foolery, vote President Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan for sustained democracy and the improved future of our great Nation. Vote #GEJ4Naija

Stop pendling falsewood, and preching gospels of hatred and lies.

Secondly, what do you call issues, except if you call backmail isuues will i give you a pass for addressing issues, or how has the party addressed the insistent physical attack of Goodluck Jonathan and vandalization of properties belonging or carrying Jonathans pictures or PDP logo by people loyal to Buhari and APC.
