The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, in Onitsha, Anambra State is not really a happy union at the moment.

Its anger stems from the fact that the Anambra State government had turned an I-don’t-care attitude to the on-going strike by the state branch of Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, JUSUN.

To the NBA, the government does not seem bothered by the continued industrial action and, in a statement signed by Mr Chukwudi Obieze, Chairman, its chairman in Onitsha on Sunday, the union, which is made of professional lawyers, described the situation as saddening.

The statement said while other state governments have found ways of resolving issues with the JUSUN chapters in their various states, Anambra has remained lukewarm.

“The Nigerian Bar Association Onitsha Branch is not happy with the present situation where the courts have remained shut since Jan. 2, 2015.

“This is a situation which is neither obtainable nor desirable in a democratic society.

“The yearnings of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, which gave rise to the strike action is in tandem with the provisions of the constitution.

“The courts have remained shut for too long and it is time the Anambra Government ensures that the strike is called off,” the statement said while urging the government to respect the provisions of the constitution regarding to the independence of the judiciary.
