The late M.D Yusuf: buried in Katsina

The remains of former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Alhaji M.D. Yusuf have been buried in Katsina on Thursday.

Yusuf died at the age of 84 at about 11 p.m. on Wednesday in Abuja following a protracted illness.

The funeral prayer, led by the Chief Imam of Katsina, Malam Lawal, was conducted at 2.30 p.m. at the palace of the Emir of Katsina.

The former police chief was buried in accordance with Islamic rites at the Dantakun cemetery in Katsina.

Muhammad Dikko Yusuf was born on Nov. 10, 1931 in the royal family of Katsina and was named after his grandfather, the late Emir of Katsina, Muhammadu Dikko.

He did his elementary and middle schools in Katsina at the old Katsina Provincial School before proceeding to Kano School of Arabic and Islamic Studies (IAS) in 1947, where he studied English and Arabic.

Yusuf worked with Katsina Native Authority from 1949 to 1954, and had a brief stint with the Northern Region Government before transferring his service to the Federal Government as a police officer in 1962.

Yusuf was promoted to the rank of I-G by the late Head of State, Gen. Murtala Muhammad in 1975 and retired in 1979.

He joined politics in 1997 during which he raised the Movement for Democracy and Justice (MDJ) under which he sought to contest for Nigeria’s Presidency but the party endorsed then Head of State, Gen. Sani Abatcha.

NAN reports that among the dignitaries that attended the funeral prayer were the Governor of Katsina State, Alhaji Ibrahim Shema, the Emir of Katsina, Alhaji Abdulmumini Kabir, Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi II, Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi.
