Atlético Madrid survived an initial onslaught from crosstown rivals Real Madrid to earn a goalless draw in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal clash at the Estadio Vicente Calderón on Tuesday.

Real went into the match aiming to end a run of six matches without a win against Atlético and were boosted by the return of James Rodriguez, Toni Kroos and Gareth Bale to the starting line-up.

And Los Merengues showed their intent from early on, as Bale had a curling effort saved by Jan Oblak when through on goal after just four minutes.

Oblak went on to deny Cristiano Ronaldo from a free-kick as well as James Rodriguez on two occasions, before denying Bale’s long range effort to keep scores goalless at half-time.

The second period saw Real’s firm control of proceedings abate a little, with Atlético’s Arda Turan glancing a header wide soon after the restart while Toni Kroos tested Oblak from long range just before the hour mark.

An organised Atlético side held off their city rivals to extend their unbeaten run over Real to seven matches and be left needing at least a score-draw to reach the last four.

Meanwhile in Turin, Juventus will take a slender 1-0 lead from the first leg courtesy of Arturo Vidal’s second half penalty against Monaco.

It was the French visitors that had the first sniff of goal when Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco fired straight at Gianluigi Buffon after being set through on goal by Anthony Martial.

Carlos Tevez shot a weak effort that was saved by Danijel Subašić around the half-hour mark as the first half ended goalless.

Buffon denied substitute Bernardo Silva early in the second half, and soon saw his side take the lead at the other end in contentious manner.

Alvaro Morata went down off a challenge by Ricardo Carvalho as both struggled to reach a lobbed pass from veteran midfielder Andrea Pirlo – making a first appearance since February due to injury – towards goal.

Although the referee ruled a penalty for Juve, Monaco players felt the foul occurred outside the area but their protests got waved aside as Vidal fired into the top corner to break the deadlock after 57 minutes.

Geoffrey Kondogbia was denied by Buffon minutes later as Monaco searched for an away goal, but the Old Lady held on for a slim first leg advantage.
