Godswill Akpabio, with Udom Emmanuel, the PDP candidate

The result of the governorship election in Akwa Ibom state, where protests erupted today has been announced.

According to the official result released by INEC, the PDP candidate, Udom Emmanuel scored 996,071 votes, while the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Chief Umanah Okon Umanah scored 89,865 votes. Labour Party candidate scored 86,000 votes.

The All Progressives Congress reported many violations of the electoral law, with many cases of ballot snatching, violence, party agent intimidation and no voting in many parts of the state. The state also recorded the killing of five persons during the election.

Analysts said the vote credited to the PDP candidate was suspect in an election which the opposition said did not take place in many parts of the state. The vote tally was also more than the 953, 304 recorded for President Goodluck Jonathan two weeks ago.
