The police on Thursday arraigned a 40-year-old man, Hassan Abubakar at the Gudu Upper Area Court for absconding with 15 cows and 16 sheep.

The accused, a resident of Funtu village, Abuja, is standing trial on a four-count charge of criminal breach of trust, cheating, criminal intimidation and theft.

The prosecutor, Insp. Umoh Inah, told the court that one Mrs Bola Disu of Zuma Barracks, Abuja, reported the case at the FCT Police Command, Abuja, on March 26.

He said that the complainant gave the accused 15 cows and 16 sheep in June 2010 to rear for her and also paid him a monthly salary of N30, 000.

He further said that the accused eventually absconded with the animals and that police investigations had revealed that the suspect sold them.

He said that the younger brother of the accused, Gambo Abubakar, was arrested and he eventually led the police to Bunty village, in Bwari Area Council, where eight of the cows were recovered.

The prosecutor said that the accused person’s brother was now at large and the remaining seven cows and 16 sheep had yet to be recovered.

Inah also alleged that the accused, who showed no remorse for the crime, resorted to intimidating the complainant and threatened to kill her.

He added that the value of the remaining missing cattle was over two million naira and that the offence contravened sections 312, 322, 319 and 287 of the Penal Code.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, granted the accused bail in the sum of N2.1 million with one surety that must reside within the jurisdiction of the court.

He adjourned the case to June 5 for hearing.
