President Jonathan receiving the report on the NNPC audited accounts by PriceWaterhouseCoopers, from country director Uyi Akpata on 2 February

On 2 February, President Goodluck Jonathan received in audience in Abuja, a team of the international audit firm, PriceWaterHouseCoopers, led by country director, Uyi Akpata. Also at the meeting was Nigeria’s auditor-general, Mr. Samuel Ukura.

The PWC team had completed the audit of the NNPC, in the wake of accusations that the government oil company had not been remitting into the Federation account, the actual proceeds of oil sales and that $20 billion was unaccounted for.

The highlight of what was submitted, according to a selective leak by government was that $1.4 billion was unremitted and not $20 billion.

It was 10 days to the presidential election and President Jonathan wanted to brush aside a major issue of the campaign: monumental corruption and the theft of oil proceeds. Though the election was postponed till 28 March, it was not clear whether Jonathan really reaped any advantage from the report, as the refusal to make public, the full report, raised a number of questions and in fact, further made government’s credibility suspect.

But on Sunday, President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari vowed to probe the $20billion allegation all over again. Less than 24 hours after, government responded and finally made ‘the full report’ public.

But is it the full report?
