Emily Kachoke: critics call her ‘ugly’

Controversy has broken out in Zimbabwe over the definition of what is beautiful.

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, one wise old saying goes.But to Zimbabweans, society must have a consensus on this issue.

The beauty debate broke out after Emily Kachote, 25, emerged Miss World Zimbabwe 2015 at a contest on 25 April. Emily will now carry Zimbabwe’s flag at the Miss World 2015 pageant later in the year.

But no sooner Kachote was crowned than the Zimbabwe social media buzzed with criticisms about the sense of judgement of the judges.

“Where is her beauty? Why didn’t they just say they couldn’t get a winner this year?” wrote one of several Facebook and Twitter users.

The attacks have gone as far as traducers circulating Emily’s old images on the net and being made a laughing stock. Some critics even compared Emily to South Africa’s Miss World contestant Liesl Laurie.

Emily however does not lack defenders, such as former beauty queens.

Miss Zimbabwe 2004 Lorraine Maphala-Phiri told the Chronicle newspaper: “Miss World isn’t only about outlook, it’s about the whole package… I also agree that… comparing our queen with Miss South Africa isn’t fair.”

Is Emily shown here really ugly? Is she, a dark skinned lady, as ‘beautiful as Liesl, fair skinned?
