Andy Murray wins Rogers Cup for third time

Andy Murray survived a three-hour war of attrition to topple Novak Djokovic for Rogers Cup in Montreal on the fifth match point on Sunday, beating the world number one, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

It was #Murray’s  9th  win over   Djokovic in 28 meetings. Murray  had not beaten Djokovic  since claiming the Wimbledon final in 2013

“To win this one was nice, especially the way the match went as well,” Murray said.

“It would have been easy for me to let that one slip away. But I fought well and stayed calm in the important moments of the third set.

“I think I did come up and play aggressively when I needed to. Especially in the third set when I was breakpoints down, I finished a couple of points at the net, got some free points on my first serve, as well. I would say the margins were so fine… I felt like I played as aggressively as I could today. That helped.”

#Djokovic, whose 12 match winning streak on the ATP Masters final was snapped, said:

“Well, you never like losing, but any streak comes to an end.  I’m fine, you know,” Djokovic said. “I did fight till the last point and did try my best.  That’s something that I take as a positive from this week.”

Murray’s victory marked just his ninth in 28 meetings with Djokovic. and despite the pair being back atop the Emirates ATP Rankings, Djokovic refused to call it the next great rivalry in the men’s game.

“I think we already have a rivalry. It’s not the next. It’s already existing there for many years,” he said.

“Andy is deservedly a winner today on the court. I thought what made the difference was his serve and my serve. I didn’t serve well the first set and a half. After, I just wasn’t able to serve. But not taking anything away from him, from his victory.  He deserved it.  He stepped in, played some great shots.  Most of all the moments when he needed to, he served very, very well.”
