A Magistrates’ Court in  Nigeria on Thursday sentenced a surety, Tajudeen Agboola, to two years imprisonment for failing to produce an accused in court.

The 52-year-old surety was arraigned after he failed to produce in court the accused, Tokunbo Olaide, 38, who was charged with N1.7 million fraud.

The prosecutor, Cpl. Abosede Adegeshin said the accused, Tokunbo Olaide, committed the offence at Oke-Ota Awori community in Ikorodu sometime in 2012 on the pretext of selling a land to a man, Mr Andrew Okogbe.

Adegeshin said the accused, who pleaded not guilty to the charge, was granted bail in the sum of N500, 000 with one surety.

She told the court in Ikorodu, Lagos state, that the runaway accused had breached Section 132 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

In his ruling, the Magistrate, Mr O.O. Olatunji, gave the surety an option of N500, 000 which he could not pay.
