Chinedu Obasi: in search of a club

There is a slim hope that  Nigerian international and  former Schalke striker Chinedu Obasi will get signed on by English premiership side, Sunderland.

Everything depends on the Nigerian, said Sam Allardyce, coach of Sunderland.

Obasi, who carries a German passport,  really needs to prove himself that he is  still potent as a striker.

In his last stint at Schalke in Germany, he could only score four goals in 34 matches, in contrast to his flourishing time at Hoffenheim, where he netted 25 goals in 91 appearances.

The 29-year-old forward, a free agent,  has been on trial with Sam Allardyce’s squad but has been struggling to prove his fitness after breaking a leg earlier in the year.

Speaking previously, Allardyce said: ‘He [Obasi] is a Nigerian international and we are just seeing because he’s got a reasonably good CV, in terms of where he’s played before.

‘He has been fraught with a bad injury, which is why he’s not been fixed up with a club yet, but we’d like to see him for this week and perhaps next week.

‘But I need someone who has an impact now, not in three weeks time, so it will be a difficult task I think. But he’s here and if he can show us anything we haven’t got then there maybe something we can do.’

The striker previously played for Norwegian second division side Lyn before moving to Hoffenheim in 2007, and has 18 caps for Nigeria.
